Health indicator
Get flagged if your markup is too low to cover risk — or too high to be competitive.
Markup vs margin — the difference that matters
Markup and margin are often used interchangeably — but they measure different things, and confusing them can cost you money.
Used for internal pricing. A 25% markup on a $100 cost gives you a $125 quote.
Used for financial reporting. The same $125 quote on $100 cost is a 20% margin — not 25%.
This calculator shows both, so you can quote in markup but still understand your true margin.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Freight Markup Calculator?▾
A Freight Markup Calculator helps freight forwarders, brokers, and logistics providers build a customer-facing freight quote. It takes your carrier cost plus handling and other fees, applies a markup, and returns the customer quote — plus the markup and margin figures behind it.
What is the difference between markup and margin?▾
Markup is calculated on cost: Markup % = (Price − Cost) ÷ Cost. Margin is calculated on price: Margin % = (Price − Cost) ÷ Price. A 25% markup is only a 20% margin. This calculator shows both so you can quote with confidence.
What markup should I apply on freight?▾
Freight markups vary widely by service and market — 10–15% for competitive LCL lanes, 15–30% for air freight and expedited services, and 30%+ for specialized or project cargo. Your markup should cover administration, risk, currency fluctuation, and profit.
Is the Freight Markup Calculator free?▾
Yes, the IMEXLOG Freight Markup Calculator is completely free with no sign-up required. If you need a professional report with a detailed breakdown and reference number, you can optionally purchase one for $4.99.
What is included in the Professional Freight Quote Report?▾
The Professional Freight Quote Report includes the carrier cost, handling fees, other costs, total underlying cost, markup percentage, markup amount, margin percentage, suggested customer quote, and a unique reference number. It is saved to your IMEXLOG account.
Should I show markup to my customer?▾
No. Customer quotes should show the final price, not your cost or markup. This calculator is for your internal pricing — do not include the breakdown in customer-facing documents.
Can I use this for other logistics services?▾
Yes. The same markup logic applies to warehousing, customs brokerage, trucking, air freight, and other logistics services. Just adjust the underlying cost and markup to reflect the specific service you are quoting.
Does the calculator handle multi-currency freight quotes?▾
Not directly. The calculator works in a single currency. For multi-currency quotes, convert your carrier cost into your pricing currency first using the IMEXLOG Currency Calculator, then apply your markup here.
