How to calculate CBM

CBM (cubic meter) is calculated by multiplying the length, width, and height of your cargo in metres:

CBM = Length (m) × Width (m) × Height (m) × Quantity

For example, a shipment of 10 boxes, each measuring 120 cm × 80 cm × 100 cm:

  1. Convert to metres: 1.2 m × 0.8 m × 1.0 m = 0.96 m³ per box
  2. Multiply by quantity: 0.96 × 10 = 9.6 m³ total CBM

The IMEXLOG CBM Calculator does this automatically — just enter your dimensions, choose your unit, and read the total.

Frequently asked questions

What is CBM in shipping?▾

CBM stands for Cubic Meter. In shipping, it is the volume of your cargo — calculated by multiplying the length, width, and height of a package. It is the standard measurement used for sea freight (especially LCL shipments) and container utilization planning.

How do I calculate CBM?▾

CBM = Length × Width × Height (in metres). For multiple packages, multiply by the number of packages. IMEXLOG's free CBM Calculator does this instantly and supports centimetres, metres, and inches.

What is the difference between CBM and volumetric weight?▾

CBM measures volume in cubic meters. Volumetric weight converts that volume into a comparable weight for billing — typically using a divisor of 167 kg per m³ for air freight. Carriers bill based on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight.

Is the CBM Calculator free?▾

Yes, the IMEXLOG CBM Calculator is completely free with no sign-up required. If you need a professional report with calculation details, assumptions, and reference number, you can optionally purchase one for $4.99.

What is included in the Professional CBM Report?▾

The Professional CBM Report includes all calculation details, assumptions used, a shipment summary, cost breakdown (where applicable), date and time stamp, and a unique reference number. It is saved to your IMEXLOG account for future reference.

Can I use the CBM Calculator for air freight?▾

Yes. The calculator provides estimated volumetric weight using a common air freight divisor (167 kg/m³). Actual carrier divisors can vary by service and route, so always confirm the final chargeable weight with your freight forwarder.

How do I convert centimetres to CBM?▾

Multiply length × width × height in centimetres, then divide by 1,000,000. For example, 120 cm × 80 cm × 100 cm = 960,000 cm³ = 0.96 m³. The IMEXLOG CBM Calculator handles this automatically.

Does the calculator work on mobile?▾

Yes. The IMEXLOG CBM Calculator is fully responsive and works on phones, tablets, and desktops. It is also available inside the IMEXLOG mobile app for iOS and Android.
