How MOQ is calculated
MOQ is the order quantity required to cover fixed costs and reach a profit target. It answers the question: "How many units must I order for this deal to make sense?"
Contribution per unit is selling price minus variable cost — the amount each unit contributes toward covering fixed costs and generating profit.

Frequently asked questions
What is MOQ?▾
MOQ stands for Minimum Order Quantity — the smallest number of units a supplier or manufacturer will accept in a single order. Suppliers set an MOQ to make production runs and shipping economical.
How is MOQ calculated?▾
MOQ = (Fixed costs + Target profit) ÷ Contribution per unit. Rounding up to the nearest whole unit gives a practical MOQ. IMEXLOG's MOQ Calculator applies this formula and rounds the result.
What is break-even MOQ?▾
Break-even MOQ is the number of units required to cover all fixed costs with zero profit: Break-even MOQ = Fixed costs ÷ Contribution per unit. This is the absolute minimum you should order — below this, you lose money.
Is the MOQ Calculator free?▾
Yes, the IMEXLOG MOQ Calculator is completely free with no sign-up required. If you need a professional report with a detailed breakdown and reference number, you can optionally purchase one for $4.99.
What is included in the Professional MOQ Report?▾
The Professional MOQ Report includes the MOQ mode used, all inputs, calculated MOQ, recommended carton-aligned MOQ, break-even point, per-unit contribution and margin, and a unique reference number. It is saved to your IMEXLOG account.
How does carton packing affect MOQ?▾
If your supplier packs in cartons of, say, 20 units, the practical MOQ must be a multiple of 20. IMEXLOG's MOQ Calculator rounds the calculated MOQ up to the nearest whole unit — you can then adjust by entering a carton quantity.
Does MOQ include shipping costs?▾
Fixed costs in the MOQ calculation should include all costs that do not vary with quantity — including one-time shipping setup, tooling, packaging design, and any minimum freight charges. Recurring per-unit costs are captured in the unit contribution.
Can I use this calculator for import MOQ?▾
Yes. The MOQ Calculator works for any trade scenario — import, export, or domestic. Just enter your fixed costs (order setup, minimum freight, inspection) and your unit contribution.
