How import cost is calculated

The total landed import cost combines the goods value, transport, and all government charges at the destination.

Customs value (CIF) = Product + Shipping + Insurance
Duty = Customs value × Duty rate
VAT / GST = (Customs value + Duty) × Tax rate
Total import cost = Product + Shipping + Insurance + Duty + VAT + Fees

Under FOB valuation (US-style), shipping and insurance are excluded from the customs value — reducing the duty base. Under CIF valuation (most countries), they are included.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Import Cost Calculator?▾

An Import Cost Calculator estimates the total cost of importing goods — including customs value, duty, VAT/GST, brokerage, and other fees. It gives importers a clear landed-cost figure to price products and plan cash flow before the shipment arrives.

How is customs value calculated?▾

Under most countries' customs rules (based on the WTO Valuation Agreement), customs value is the transaction value of the goods — the price actually paid or payable — plus international freight and insurance when valued on a CIF basis. Some countries (like the US) value on an FOB basis, excluding international freight and insurance. This calculator supports both.

Is VAT or GST charged on top of duty?▾

In most countries, yes. VAT/GST is usually calculated on the CIF customs value plus the duty — meaning duty itself is taxed. This is often called "duty-on-duty". The IMEXLOG Import Cost Calculator applies this standard calculation automatically.

Is the Import Cost Calculator free?▾

Yes, the IMEXLOG Import Cost Calculator is completely free with no sign-up required. If you need a professional report with a full cost breakdown and reference number, you can optionally purchase one for $4.99.

What is included in the Professional Import Cost Report?▾

The Professional Import Cost Report includes the customs value, duty rate and amount, VAT/GST rate and amount, other fees, total landed import cost, per-unit landed cost, cost breakdown by percentage, and a unique reference number. It is saved to your IMEXLOG account.

Where do I find my duty rate?▾

Your duty rate depends on the HS code of your product and the importing country's tariff schedule. Use the IMEXLOG HS Code Guide to research your classification, then check the importing country's official tariff publication or ask a licensed customs broker to confirm the exact rate.

Does the calculator include anti-dumping or safeguard duties?▾

No. Anti-dumping duties, countervailing duties, and safeguard measures are additional to the standard duty rate and depend on the country of origin and product. If these apply, add them separately or consult a trade specialist.

Does the calculator work on mobile?▾

Yes. The IMEXLOG Import Cost Calculator is fully responsive and works on phones, tablets, and desktops. It is also available inside the IMEXLOG mobile app.
