Suspicious Jet Ski Leads to Port Drug Bust
Spanish authorities have arrested three people after allegedly attempting to remove 50 kilograms of cocaine from a containership at the Port of Algeciras using a stolen jet ski and disguises resembling those worn by port workers.
The operation began when Guardia Civil officers detected a suspicious jet ski operating close to a container vessel that was carrying out cargo-handling operations at the port.
A coordinated surveillance operation involving the Guardia Civil's Maritime Service, its Fiscal and Border Company, and Customs Surveillance officers was then launched.
Suspects Boarded Ship in Port Worker Clothing
According to Spain's Tax Agency, three people were aboard the jet ski when it approached the quay alongside the containership.
Two of the suspects subsequently boarded the vessel wearing clothing similar to that used by port workers, apparently attempting to blend into the normal cargo-handling activity.
Authorities were already monitoring their movements and moved to intercept them while they were aboard the ship.
A subsequent inspection of the vessel uncovered two backpacks that investigators said had been removed from a maritime container and hidden after the suspects apparently realized they were being watched.
Inside the bags were 50 individual packages of cocaine weighing approximately one kilogram each.
Cocaine Valued at More Than €1.5 Million
Laboratory analysis confirmed that the seized substance was cocaine.
Spanish authorities estimated the illicit-market value of the 50-kilogram shipment at more than €1.5 million.
The third suspect was intercepted separately while operating the jet ski, which investigators determined had been stolen in La Línea de la Concepción only a few hours before the port operation.
The three suspects were subsequently handed over to judicial authorities, who ordered that they be remanded in custody.
Growing Concern Over Port Infiltration
The operation highlights a growing security challenge facing major European container ports, where criminal networks can attempt to exploit legitimate cargo-handling operations to retrieve narcotics hidden inside containers.
Rather than relying on legitimate port employees, the suspects in this case allegedly attempted to create the appearance that they were authorized workers by using similar clothing.
The rapid detection of the suspicious jet ski allowed investigators to monitor the suspects before they could successfully remove the drugs from the terminal.
Algeciras Remains a Major Security Focus
The seizure comes amid continuing efforts by Spanish authorities to strengthen controls against organized drug trafficking through major maritime gateways.
Algeciras is one of Europe's major container and transshipment hubs, making cargo-security operations an important part of efforts to prevent criminal networks from exploiting international supply chains.
The latest case also demonstrates how maritime surveillance can extend beyond the terminal itself, with the suspicious movement of a small watercraft providing the initial clue that led investigators to the suspected smuggling operation.
Spanish authorities continue to target methods used by trafficking organizations to move cocaine through ports, including attempts to exploit containers, port access and legitimate maritime operations.
