New SONCAP Requirement for Imported Electronics in Nigeria

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has issued a new directive requiring SONCAP certification for all imported electronic products effective March 1, 2026.

What changed

Previously, some categories of electronics could be cleared with a Certificate of Conformity issued on arrival. Under the new rule, the Product Certificate must be obtained BEFORE the goods leave the country of origin.\n\nWhat this means for importers\n\n1. Every shipment of electronics must have a valid SONCAP Product Certificate and SC (SONCAP Certificate) before loading.\n2. Cargo arriving without the SC will be rejected at the port and returned at the importer's expense.\n3. Clearance agents must submit the SC number in the PAAR application.\n\nProducts affected\n\n- Mobile phones and accessories\n- Laptops and computer peripherals\n- Home appliances (TVs, fans, blenders, etc.)\n- Power equipment (generators, inverters, stabilizers)\n- Cable and wire products\n\nRecommended action\n\nIf you are importing any electronic product into Nigeria, contact your supplier immediately and confirm they can obtain SONCAP certification before shipment. Our trade specialists can coordinate the certification process with accredited agencies on your behalf.\n\nNeed help?\n\nStart a Trade Request through the IMEXLOG Trade Desk and select 'Verify a supplier' or 'Custom trade solution'.
